Cloudification of mobile networks - Expectations, Challenges, and Opportunities.

This panel explores the industry trend of network cloudification, which aims to untie network functions in RAN and core from specialized hardware. The main drivers are the increasing pressure on telecom operators to reduce cost and the need to satisfy the steeply increasing customer demands. The enabling technologies for this paradigm shift are software defined networking and network function virtualization. However, network cloudification has broader implications on the way networks are operated, managed and deployed, and may lead to new business models and new opportunities for telecom operators and service providers as well.

Klaus Moessner

Klaus Moessner ([email protected]) is a Professor in the Centre for Communication Systems Research at the University of Surrey, UK. Klaus earned his Dipl-Ing (FH) at The University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, Germany, an MSc in Advance Instrumentation from Brunel University, UK and his PhD from the University of Surrey (UK).

His research interests include reconfigurability on different levels, including object and function virtualization, management and control of virtualized resources, and cognitive networks. These interests map to the IoT domains Crowdsensing, Activity and Situation Recognition, and Cognitive Systems areas, and the Smart City and Smart Transport domains. He is teaches on mobile operating systems, mobile service platforms, service oriented architectures, mobile service delivery and service enablers. Klaus leads the workarea on system architecture and co-existence in the 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey.

Dirk Kutscher

Dr. Dirk Kutscher is a Chief Researcher and SDN Architect at Network Laboratories of NEC Europe Ltd. in Heidelberg, Germany. He received his doctoral degree from Universität Bremen in 2003, while working for the Center for Computing Technologies (Technologiezentrum Informatik, TZI). He received his diploma degree from Universität Bremen in 1997. Before joining NEC, he worked as a visiting researcher at KDDI R&D Laboratories Inc. in Japan and as a postdoc at Universität Bremen. His main interests are new networking architectures, programmability of networked systems, and Information-Centric Networking. Dirk is co-chairing the Internet Research Task Force group on Information-Centric Networking (ICNRG) and has just initiated a new ACM SIGCOMM conference on ICN. Dirk has continuously participated in IETF standardisation since 1998, has co-authored two books, several Internet Drafts, RFCs and scientific publications and has co-organized many workshops and seminars on ICN, Capacity Sharing and related topics.

Wolfgang Kellerer

The research interests of Professor Kellerer (b. 1970) include methods and systems for mobile and fixed communication networks as an infrastructure for future Internet communication. His research work focuses primarily on concepts for the dynamic control of network infrastructure (Software Defined Networking) and traffic management, as well as on the support of emerging applications such as Smart Grid and e-Mobility. After studying electrical engineering and information technology at TUM, he obtained his PhD from the same university in 2002. Following a period as a visiting researcher at Stanford University, California, USA, he joined NTT DOCOMO’s European Research Institute (DOCOMO Euro-Labs) where he most recently served as the head of the Wireless Communication and Networking Research Department. Professor Kellerer has been a full professor at TUM since July 2012. Professor Kellerer is a senior member of IEEE.

Wolfgang Kiess

Wolfgang Kiess is the leader of the virtualization research team at DOCOMO Euro-Labs in Munich, the European research laboratory of Japan's largest mobile service provider NTT DOCOMO. He develops solutions for the virtualization of complete cellular networks. His focus lies on the next generation core network, network function virtualization and the interconnection this has with cloud networking and cloud computing. Before joining DOCOMO Euro-Labs, he was a research staff member at the University of Düsseldorf. There, he designed communication solutions for intelligent transportation systems together with Volkswagen. He studied at the Universities of Mannheim and Nice/France and holds a diploma in business information systems from the University of Mannheim and a doctoral degree in computer science from the University of Düsseldorf.

Dr. Kiess has published more than 35 scientific papers in respective journals, conferences and workshops on mobile networking and is inventor or co-inventor of 9 patents and patent applications.

Alberto Leon-Garcia

Professor Alberto Leon-Garcia is Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics an Electrical Engineering "For contributions to multiplexing and switching of integrated services traffic". He is also a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has received the 2006 Thomas Eadie Medal from the Royal Society of Canada and the 2010 IEEE Canada A. G. L. McNaughton Gold Medal for his contributions to the area of communications. Professor Leon-Garcia is author of the leading textbooks: Probability and Random Processes for Electrical Engineering, and Communication Networks: Fundamental Concepts and Key Architecture. He is currently Scientific Director of the NSERC Strategic Network for Smart Applications on Virtual Infrastructures.

Moderator: Andreas Maeder

Dr. rer. nat. Andreas Maeder received his PhD from the University of Wuerzburg, Germany in 2008. Since then, he is affiliated with NEC Laboratories Europe in Heidelberg, Germany, where he is currently working on 5th Generation mobile communication systems in access and core network based on cloud computing principles. Since 2009, Andreas contributes to the standardization of mobile networks such as IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) and 3GPP LTE, where his focus is on system architecture and resource management aspects. Since 2011, he is leading work package 3 on MAC and resource management in the EU FP7 project iJOIN. Andreas was TPC chair and general chair of the IEEE Broadband Wireless Access Workshop 2012 and 2013, resp, and was TPC member of numerous international conferences. He is author of more than 40 conference papers, journal articles and book chapters, and holds several patents in the area of mobile communication networks.
